Geothermal Heat Pump
How does a Geothermal heat pump work?
Ground source heating and cooling is a high-comfort, cost effective, and environmentally friendly technology that takes advantage of the Earth's capacity to store energy in the form of heat. Geothermal heat pumps move heat from the earth into your home.
The geothermal heat pump provides heating and cooling tasks including hot water by obtaining heat through a connection to the earth known as an earth loop or ground loop. The ground loop (see left picture) consists of a piping system that transfers what is needed from the earth to the heat pump and back to provide heating and cooling.
Since only a very small amount of electricity is consumed by a geothermal heating and cooling system to move the heat from the earth to the building (or vice-versa), and no fuel is burned, it is possible to calculate a "pay out period" for the purchase of the heat pump. Gas, propane, oil and electric heating and cooling systems can never pay out because there is a constant and significant fuel cost (information was taken from www.soundgt.com).
Williams Developments Inc typically uses the "Bosch Heat Pump." This system also has efficient cooling for the summer months. This unit is cleanly installed with no exterior units on the house.
Efficiency New Brunswick recently tested a Williams Development home. The rating was 88 out of 100 on the EnerGuide! On a home 4200 square feet the heating bill alone would be $700-$800 per YEAR to heat! Try that on for size!!!
Other efficient heating options that Williams Developments provide are: air-to-air heat pumps and ductless heat pumps for a more cost efficient home build.
